How to Get to Kuusamo

Getting to Kuusamo is easy

Kuusamo is easy to reach throughout the year by plane, train, bus or car. Flying from Helsinki to Kuusamo is the fastest option, while train and bus connections offer convenient alternatives for travelling north.

Isokenkäisten Klubi is located in the peaceful Kuusamo wilderness, approximately 40 minutes from both Kuusamo and Ruka. If you are travelling without your own car, remember to arrange transportation for the final part of your journey.

Flying to Kuusamo – Direct Flights to Kuusamo

The fastest way to reach Kuusamo is by air. Finnair operates year-round flights from Helsinki to Kuusamo Airport, making Kuusamo easy to reach from Finland and via Helsinki from international destinations.

During the winter season, Kuusamo also has excellent direct flight connections from Europe. In addition to the year-round Helsinki flights, there are 9 direct winter flight connections from 8 European cities to Kuusamo, operated by airBaltic, Edelweiss, Eurowings and Lufthansa.

You can also fly from Riga to Kuusamo with airBaltic during the winter, with connecting flights from several other European cities.

From Kuusamo Airport, you can continue to Isokenkäisten Klubi by car or arranged transportation.

Getting to Kuusamo by Train and Bus

There is no railway station in Kuusamo, but you can travel by train to Oulu, Rovaniemi or Kemijärvi and continue to Kuusamo by bus or car.

The night train runs daily from Helsinki to Kemijärvi, with a bus connection onwards to Ruka. You can also travel north on a car-carrier train, allowing you to continue your journey with your own car after a comfortable overnight train journey.

Bus connections are also available between Rovaniemi and Kuusamo on weekdays. Routes and timetables can be checked through Matkahuolto.

During the winter season, there are also direct bus connections from the Helsinki metropolitan area to Ruka.

Getting Around Kuusamo

Local public transport is available in Kuusamo and particularly around the Ruka area. Isokenkäisten Klubi is located away from the main resort areas in the surrounding wilderness, so transportation should be planned in advance if you are travelling without your own car.

Driving to Kuusamo

Travelling by car gives you plenty of flexibility for exploring Kuusamo and the surrounding Ruka-Kuusamo region.

From Helsinki, the most direct route to Kuusamo follows Finnish national road 5, with a driving distance of a little over 800 km. Travelling via Oulu is another popular option.

When driving in Northern Finland, remember that you will be travelling through reindeer herding areas. Reindeer may be on or close to the road, so drive carefully, particularly in poor visibility.

Electric vehicle charging stations are available along the main routes and around Kuusamo.

Driving to Isokenkäisten Klubi

Isokenkäisten Klubi is located approximately 45 km from Kuusamo and 41.5 km from Ruka, with a driving time of around 30–45 minutes.
